why not take a sick of work day?

we get sick days, but why not sick of work days?

this is the thought that inspired this whole journey for me. it's been a few months since i took a sick of the cubicle day and since then i feel like my eyes have been opened. i'm through the looking glass. every few weeks i've taken and afternoon off at random with no plan or thought of what to do. I'll let opportunity knock and then grab it and kidnap for a whirlwind adventure. i've seen more movies than i otherwise would have, i've read more books, caught up with friends, listened to more music, played my guitar more and just basically lived more.

i'm organizing with my friends for all of us to take a sick of work day and just hang out and do something stupidly fun. just see what the day presents and go for it. my mates Richard, Jordy, Andre and Dan are in, and they are trying to get a few of their mates to get in on it too.

why should i be on the right track? why can't i make my own track?

So i caught up with a group of friends on the weekend. People who i've been e-mailing my little rants to and we just got talking about where we all are at the moment. It seems the freedom we were all expecting to lay our hands on when we left uni comes with some hidden catches. We were talking about how all of us are for the first time starting to earn some decent money, well decent enough, and straight away there is all this pressure to have a financial plan, to save, to invest. And those of us not in relationships are being pressured into settling down. And it comes from everywhere. The girls in relationships wanna know when we are going to find a nice girl, our folks wanna know when we are going to settle down. But come on, this is the part of life that we all should be doing stuff that when we finally do settle down, we can look back at and laugh at.

So we started doing a list of all the things we thought we would be doing now and all the things that are stopping us. And man, it was amazing. It seems there are all these limits around us to keep us in check. To keep us on the "right track". do this at work and you'll be on the "right track" to a promotion. Do this with your hard earned money and you'll be on the "right track" to financial security. Date a nice girl and you'll be on the "right track" to a home, a family, etc.

I say stuff the right track. Give me the wrong track. Or better yet let me make my own track. Let me make mistakes. Glorious huge mistakes.

Why can't Wednesday be half time?

You know how all these big sporting events have half time, I'm wondering why can't the work week? Why can't Wednesday be half time? I've put in a solid two days - how about some orange quarters and down time to get ready for the rest of the week? since when did we decide that work was more important than living. It should be a means to an end, not the end all and be all. And how out of whack are we if the balance is 2 days off for every 5 worked. And truth be told most of us are doing some work related thing on the weekend anyway. another reports due, catching up on e-mails. You know how it is. So why not 2 days work 1 day off 2 days work 2 days off. Seems fair to me.

Or why can't we have long weekends every weekend? Imagine all the fun you'd have. Gone would be the blase weekend. With 3 days off we all go somewhere. We all do something fun. We all live.
